Centered around the sketching phase of architectural projects, the studio Dinosaur Junior addresses the issue of the re-densification of rural and peri-urban areas in the Munich metropolitan area. Design is based on case studies, understanding and inclusion in a genealogy of architectural styles of the projects designed.
Completion of the project Söltlstr. 16, the idea is to propose a densification of Munich's suburban areas through desirable and generous architecture, rather than through economic optimisation of housing supported by property developers. How can we achieve healthy densification of these loose peri-urban areas?
Based on a pre-existing plot layout, the building's volume also adapts to the major existing trees. Structured around a central circulation hub, the dwellings are distributed according to the architectural form seen in the case study.
The programme comprises 15 dwellings, including three student flats spread over three floors. Located in the inner suburbs, the project is primarily aimed at families of up to four people, with dwellings averaging 90 m² in size. Structured around a circulation courtyard, the dwellings open onto two outdoor spaces via this wooden structure, which was developed during the case study.
Composed of continuous posts along the entire height of the frame, the structure penetrates the façade by means of beams with a maximum span of 5.3 metres. This external structure frees up a glass curtain wall façade, whose sunlight is managed by a canopy system resting on the wooden beams, as well as roller blinds.
Spreading the bedrooms out to the ends of the flats helps separate the parents' space from the kids' space, while also making the living areas the main focus of the flat. These areas, located in the corner of the floor plan, form a threshold between the courtyard, which is a semi-private space, and the outdoor garden.
